Celebs Speak
Rahul Bose
We have entered a period of
crisis. Climate change is occurring faster than we think and can
leave a devastating impact on the Earth. Over the years, we have
begun to take our nature for granted so much so that we as a
civilization are responsible for disrupting its delicate balance.
But as the old saying goes, 'What goes around comes around'.
Climate change is a real and
present danger. The carbon-dioxide levels around the Earth are
increasing at an alarming rate, warming the Earth. The effects of
climate change can already be felt- bodies of ice in Greenland and
West Antarctica are depleting, sea levels are rising at an
alarming rate, low-lying regions across the world are getting
submerged in water like the Sunder bans and there are drastic
changes in precipitation patterns.
The entire International Scientific Community has reached a
consensus that climate change is real, and probably one of the
most challenging crises that we face in our life time. The future
of our entire world- our civilization, depends on what drastic
measures we take to save the Earth.
Earth is our only home, and it is our responsibility to protect
it. Most of the population of India survives on agriculture.
Climate change will result in unusual rainfall that will affect
major crops such as wheat and barley. The effect of this on the
farmers and the entire economy is unimaginable. India is also home
to several historic monuments and climate change will greatly
affect the tourism industry.
India did not cause climate change, but we will bear its brunt if
all of us do not stand up to make a difference. We have everything
we need to stop climate change. India has ratified the Kyoto
Protocol, it is ranked amongst the highest globally in wind power
capacity, states like Rajasthan have some of the highest potential
for solar power generation in the world and several leading
scientists in India are getting appreciation for their global
contributions to fight climate change.
All we now need is the will
power to become ‘Agents of Change’. Every single person who is
dependent on this planet has a stake to protect it. It is our only
home. I believe that each and everyone can make a difference.
